GMC Sierra 1500

When the new GMC Sierra 1500 launched in 2019, it already felt a bit behind the times. it didn't even feel as refined as the old Ford F150. A new F150 in 2021 further bolstered Sierra's  status among full-size pickup trucks. Not content with a distant third place finish, the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 will debut with a series of upgrades to separate itself from the heavy hitters in the class. The biggest addition is GM's Super Cruise, which allows drivers to take their hands off the wheel under certain circumstances. What's under the hood of the Sierra 1500? The 4.3-liter V6 that was the Sierra 1500 powertrain standard  has been downsized for 2022.In its place, it is a cropped version of the unseacular turbocharged turbocharged that has been optional for  20182021 Sierra.Output remains at 310 horses, but the torque increases from 348 LBFT to another ratio of motor choice.

What are the AT4X and Denali Ultimate configurations? While the 6.2-liter engine was available on a range of models, it wasn't standard on any, not even on the top-of-the-line Denali. That is changing with the advent of two new trim levels for 2022: the AT4X and the Denali Ultimate. The AT4X is even more focused on off-road performance than the track AT4. In addition to the AT4's updates - which include low-range all-wheel drive, hill descent control and skid plates - the AT4X comes equipped with specialized shock absorbers, electronic locking front and rear differentials, and Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac Mud Terrain tires. This is very similar to the hardware  the new off-road-oriented 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 ZR2 gets and should make the AT4X quite capable on rocky terrain, although its capabilities fall short of the extravagant Ford F150 Raptor and Ram 1500 TRX.

Inside the AT4X's cabin you'll find suede headliner, upgraded leather, a 15-inch head-up display, and massaging front seats, among other things. You'll also get these features and more on the new level Denali Ultimate, which is the pinnacle of the Sierra 1500 lineup. It doesn't have the all-terrain hardware of the AT4X, but it does take up much of the interior. of this truck. It also has unique extras like laser-etched open-pore wood and extensive use of updated leather throughout the cabin. It should make a strong statement of luxury  with its 22-inch wheels, a black chrome grille, a carbon composite bed, adaptive suspension shocks and electrically retractable side steps.

How's the Sierra 1500's interior?

One of the reasons this Sierra generation looked so old when it was released was the disappointing interior design. The focal point of the instrument panel was a relatively small touchscreen surrounded by a sea of buttons on the center console. That will change for 2022 with a new 13.4-inch, landscape-oriented touchscreen that comes standard on all models except the base Pro model. The center console then overlaps, with the panel below the climate controls and the off-road rocker switches tilted slightly upward. Between the battery and the center console is a new car-like shifter that replaces the column-mounted stem of the previous Sierra. The overall result is a cabin that looks more impressive than its predecessor.

How's the Sierra 1500's tech?

The most significant addition to the 2022 Sierra 1500 is the adoption of GM's Super Cruise - a truly impressive suite of driver aids that allow hands-free driving in some conditions.

This new version also includes an automated lane change system that activates when it detects a vehicle slowing in front of you and passing you when it is safe. Note that automatic lane changes are not available when towing, but other Super Cruise features are. When using navigation, Super Cruise compatible routes will be highlighted on the map, so you know exactly where the system can be activated.

Unfortunately, Super Cruise will cost more than you pay for the package price. . Denali, Super Cruise requires  subscription fees. Three years are included to begin with, but after that you will need to pay to continue using the service. GMC has  yet to announce pricing for Super Cruise after the trial period ends. We had the opportunity to test the Sierra 1500's Super Cruise system  with or without a trailer, and can report that the truck accelerates and brakes completely naturally with the system engaged. However, the  traffic limit on our driving route meant that we were unable to test how the automatic lane change function works in real driving scenarios. For example, what  if the person in front of you sniffs at the desired speed, but traffic is stopped in front of you in the next lane? Will the system attempt to overtake the car in front by entering the slowed-down lane, or can the system see this far  and prevent such a risky maneuver? We'll have to thoroughly test a Sierra 1500 with Super Cruise to find out.
